Artist Statement:
I am drawn to industrial themes and shapes made by man.I marvel at the larger than life machinery, the seemingly impossible made to be possible. At the same time, I can become enthralled with the subtleties of a natural landscape. Colors shift as the light changes, plants grow and plants decay. The natural course of time takes hold of all life and things on earth. The opposition between the organic and inorganic is the primary inspiration for my current pursuits as an artist.
Collectively, as humans, we build on the thoughts and actions of past generations. The current discussion over the climate crisis leaves us to our own devises to build a cleaner slate for future generations. Our focus as a global community is shifting as we pull together to reassess the way we see human life on earth. Like a tug of war, the organic and inorganic compete to share the same land.
Change is a process that involves a series of events to bring about social shifts in thought. I believe people think in layers, this notion translates into my work through layering paint or wood. I use multiple coats of paint on each canvas. This technique allows some of the process underneath to be visible. I also manipulate wood to construct layered compositions and create depth of space. Through a use of diverse materials such as, wire, cut wood, branches and more, I attempt to find compositions that challenge both the viewer and myself to go beyond the idea of man vs. nature.
