CLARK RESIDES IN Sonoma County. He has developed into one of the Nation’s finest pastel artists. He specializes in landscapes and they have been recognized with prestigious prizes awarded by his peers, invitations to the finest exhibitions, and vast exposure in the national art press who have followed his ascending career and acclaimed him. He is a stately gentleman who speaks and conducts workshops gently, but he uses the pastel medium with power and clarity. He has risen through the ranks, worked diligently and determinedly, and, in mid career, has arrived to take his place amongst the living masters of the pastel medium. This soft medium lends itself to the atmospheric scenes of California. Mitchell has honed in and chosen an impressive array of subjects that bring home to the viewer just how picturesque and inspiring California is.
ARTIST STATEMENT
“My preferred subject matter is landscapes and my favored medium is soft pastels. I drag the sticks of vibrant pigment across a rough paper surface and by layering, rubbing and erasing, I created the illusion of a three-dimensional scene.
For my landscapes to fully succeed there are several conditions that must be met. First, it’s necessary to catch and hold the viewer’s eye and attention from the distractions that occur around us at all times. Possible means to do this are by using high contrast from light to dark, or varying colors from warm to cool, brilliant to subtle. The next requirement is to catch the viewer’s heart. Typically I use the romance or a favorite locale.”
Let the beauty we love be what we do. There are hundreds of ways to kneel and kiss the ground.
